Cookstown Credit Union

Cookstown Credit Union was formed in 1965 by twenty-two prominent businessmen from the town, inspired by the credit union movement introduced to Northern Ireland by John Hume. The initial capital raised through voluntary subscriptions from members amounted to £26.

Mr. Tony Eastwood graciously provided a room in his property at no cost for the Credit Union's inaugural year, serving as its office on William Street. In 1970, the Credit Union acquired more suitable premises on Molesworth Street.

On January 18, 1971, all operations were transitioned from Cookstown Credit Union to Cookstown Credit Union Limited. As the organisation grew, member loans surged from £2,500 in 1965 to £326,800 by 1986. In the late 1990s, the Credit Union invested in new premises on Fairhill Road, Cookstown, with a purchase price of £42,000.

Today

As Cookstown Credit Union has experienced significant growth over the years, its premises on the Fairhill Road became inadequate for its operations. In July 2024, the Credit Union relocated to a newly constructed building on the Burn Road, representing a £3.2 million investment after five years of planning and development. Currently, Cookstown Credit Union serves over 9,000 members, boasting a loan portfolio of £11 million and savings totalling £22 million. We believe that our new facilities and services will significantly benefit both the local community and surrounding areas.
